Toilet Paper Wreath
The great part of doing crafts and getting ideas from others
is that it should inspire you to be creative, yet resourceful with what you
already have! I try not to fall into the trap of getting an idea in my head then
going off to two craft shops and a home improvement store to buy everything. Thankfully
this DIY, inspired by Pinterest (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/488781365784508530/), incorporates
items I already have on hand.
Toilet paper: we all use them and we all can reuse the rolls. I've seen
some really cheesy ideas for reusing toilet paper rolls and I was so happy to
find one that wasn't complicated, but beautiful enough to display.
Just because we use plenty of toilet paper doesn't mean we
have 10 spare rolls laying around the house for my every crafty whim. After
finding the inspiration, I needed to save up enough rolls. It took more
months than I'd like to admit to not only get enough toilet paper rolls to use,
but to realize that I could stop saving the rolls and move along with the
project.
Materials:
hot glue gun
10+ toilet paper rolls
black spray paint
Methods:
1. I flattened the rolls to create the crease for the basic
shape.
2. I then used a ruler to mark the rolls where I wanted to
cut them. I made them each an inch wide and got 3 pieces out of each roll.
3.Next step is to orient the rolls one ring at a time. I got
them all lined up on the floor and hot glued the rolls together one by one.
4. After the first ring is solid, I oriented the second ring
and attached it to the existing ring one at a time. Repeat for a third layer
and continue for as long and as large as you want your wreath.
5. I spray-painted the rolls black to make it look more
presentable and a little less like its toilet paper origins. The nooks for the
wreath were harder to reach, so I gave it a good long spray and prayed that it
would dry soon despite that heavy layer of paint.
Additional:
By this point I decided to get started on the additional
decor. You could honestly do anything to accent the wreath (flower, bow, beads,
etc.), which is why I veered from my original inspiration to incorporate that
which I already had around the house. I used newspaper, hot glue, and a black
button to put together my flower. The hardest part was giving the petals some
volume so the flower was more fluffy than just 2-D petal-shaped paper glued
together.
I attached the newspaper flower to the wreath using a Velcro
sticker meant to adhere posters to a wall, but that's just what I had available
to get the job done.
I display the wreath proudly at my front door using an over
the door hanger and some string.
I hope this gives you inspiration to make your own crafts
using toilet paper rolls, or a wreath, or even a combo of the two.
The only warning I wish to give about this project is that
the rolls hit the wood of my front door hard enough to make a knock/crack noise
loud enough to make it sound like the door was being slammed. Other than that,
I will keep it on display for the foreseeable future!
